Selecting the engine, gearing and propeller for your boat

Sometimes attempting to deal with too much data requires some retooling ...

Here's a screenshot of the latest upgrade to our propeller calculator. The spreadsheet required an extensive rewrite and is still in the validation phase, so let me know if you spot any glitches !

The following image is a side-by-side comparison of two engines (375HP 8.2L and a 300HP 5.7L) with 1.23:1 VS 1:1 gearing for each engine. Recommended WOT range is 4200-4600 RPM for the 8.2 and 4600-5000 RPM for the 5.7 .

Analysis

  • Increased propeller torque generated by the reduction gear will require a larger diameter propeller to load the engine so it operates within its maximum RPM range.
  • From the example above, theoretically 207 shaft HP will be required to attain 50 MPH.
  • Overpowering a hull is never a good idea.

Notes

The spreadsheet is still under development and not available for general distribution.   However, if you have a specific engine/transmission combinations you'd like to run, send us an email with the particulars.
