Frames |
Because I'm building an 18' boat in a 20' garage, I'm going with a movable frame.
I've built from rough sawn 2x6 and 2x8 maple.
(10-JAN-2006)
Here's the bow section of the movable building frame.
Transom, frames 1-8, Stem, and breasthook. All encapsulated with a layer of West System Epoxy.
Frames loosely fitted on the motor stringers. It looks like a boat! (and it is BIG)
Side view of Frames 4-7 loose fitted. Stem and 8 not yet fitted. (I ripped my keel,
chines sheers, and battens... they 'll be "moving left" shortly... need to take my table saw
and planer back to the basement).
Chine first lamination... soaking the stock to help with the bend/twist.
(30-OCT-2006)
Still soaking the chines... remember to replace those bolts in the keel/stem joint with shorter ones...
Chine second lam is on. Here we're gluing on the second (of three) lams on
the sheer. That's my dad. It's been great to spend time with him working
on this. Gotta love that movable form. We are using every inch of this garage.
We counted almost 70 clamps on the boat. About 35 per side.
You can see that the sheers will need to be thickened to support the
"flare" in the bow sections. I couldn't help but start the rough fairing of the chine...
Battens and Fairing |
Bottom battens are notched and set... Started fairing. Gotta love that "Scary Sharp" plane.
Dad's on vacation, so I had to bend those battens in solo. It was a bit of
an adventure... Only broke 3 before resorting to "hot soaking" them. You can
also see where I beefed up the sheers so that I could carry the flare right through.
It's starting to take shape. You can see where I had to add some material
to the chine to provide a better landing area for the planking. You can also
see that frame #3 is unfair (too low). I'll need to build it out and try again.
Here's the extra strip added to Frame #3. I'll shape and fair that tomorrow,
and should be able to start notching for my side battens.
Here, I am hot soaking the ends of a side batten for fitting. You can see the twist in
the notches on the lower left hand side of the hull.

Here I am fitting a side batten, ensuring that I get the angle correct. Each
batten took me two or three fittings to get right. This was very tricky, because I
was working alone, and needed to flex/twist the 19' battens into place without extra
hands. Because of the angles, these were very difficult to clamp. You can see
that I resorted to temporary screws to help bring the fronts of the battens home to the stem.
Here, I'm using my pull saw to 'eyeball' the angle for the 'diamond cut' at the front of the batten.
